Derek Haines was born in Leicester, U.K. Derek has over 40 years’ experience in the police, having joined the British police in 1965. He has served in Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Cayman Islands in senior operational commands. Derek has Cayman Status and holds both British and Cayman passports.
In September 2004, he took operational command of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service during and in the aftermath of the catastrophic category 5, Hurricane Ivan.
2006. He was appointed the Head of the Health, Safety, Security and Community Liaison department with Dart Cayman Islands including responsibility for Critical Incident Management.
2018. Derek formed the Haines Disaster Consultancy (HDC) in the Cayman Islands. The company creates bespoke Disaster Management and Business Continuity Plans for clients in the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean Region. The contracts include disaster preparedness training for employees.
Commended 31 times for outstanding police work, including gallantry, Derek was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours (QBH) for his work in the community and Cayman Rugby.
He has also been awarded the Queens Police Medal (QBH 2005) and the Colonial Police Medal (QBH 1999) and Cayman Hero’s Day medals on three separate occasions.
Derek has run a total of 50 marathons and enjoys climbing and trekking. He has used these activities to raise several $millions for charitable causes in the Cayman Islands, the most recent one being for Meals on Wheels Cayman.
